How does camp food differ from regular city food?
Camping food is a sort of Spartan version of city food. The main criterion here is weight. And if you consider that on average, on a hike, one person takes 600 grams of food for each day, then in the first days of a 10-day hike, in addition to equipment, he will have to carry about 6 kg of food.
Therefore, when compiling a list, preference is given to the lightest and most compact products: cereals, nuts, energy bars, as well as dried/freeze-dried vegetables and fruits. Dried vegetables and fruits are easy to prepare at home, in a conventional oven or in an electric dryer. After drying, their weight decreases by 10-50! times and is well restored during cooking. If you don’t want to cook yourself, you can purchase ready-made freeze-dried meals and ingredients from any of a dozen companies that produce freeze-dried foods, for example, Gala-Gala.
What food to take on a hike - my layout and list of food for a hike
A little old topic, but I decided to comment. What products to take strongly depends on the conditions of the hike - the type of hike, whether there is firewood on the route, what season, difficulty, how many days to go, is there an opportunity to buy something along the way, and what, in fact, do you prefer. For example, I can easily do without chocolate and I hate onions. And for some, these are the main products on a hike. My opinion is that if you are not an expert at carrying heavy objects over distances, then it is better not to skimp on pack horses where they can pass. This immediately removes almost all weight problems. You go light, with a small backpack containing the essentials, and a large backpack and food are carried on horseback. There is nothing better than this method :). But, of course, pack horses cannot cross very rough terrain in the absence of an equestrian (namely equestrian) trail (in Altai this is mainly the last crossing to the glacier, areas of scree and kurumnik, all somewhat categorical passes). More than once we have rushed through the taiga with horses and without a path - although this is a great test. Accordingly, on climbing trips we have to carry backpacks from the place where the horse trail ends to the mountain and then back. On the mountain we take cereal flakes, raw smoked sausage, dried fruits, salt, sugar, spices, dry meat, tea and coffee, hard cheese. Lately, we have sometimes begun to take bread instead of crackers (if we are not on the mountain for long). It's fluffy enough, not too heavy, and more enjoyable to eat. But when we have pack horses with us, we take a normal set of products, the main criterion is that it does not break, does not crumble, does not go stale. But in Altai everything is so good with the climate that you can carry lamb with you for 2 weeks if you dry it and smoke it over a fire, not to mention vegetables. Regarding the fact that you need to eat a lot on a hike: in my personal experience, the more extreme the physical activity and the higher the altitude above sea level, the less you want to eat. And this does not affect the lack of strength. Rather, gluttony leads to complete apathy. After one particularly difficult trek, I couldn’t eat for another 12 hours, I was really sick. After climbing, sometimes you want nothing but tea. And the more “mattress” the hike, the more you eat. Horseback riding is especially indicative in this regard. Not only will you not lose kilos there, but you can also gain more. There are almost no loads. And in general, if you concentrate on food while hiking, then this topic will always be in the foreground. I think that when hiking, especially in Altai, it is useful to drink desalted glacial water, remove excess from the body, and eat less. There are many hiking theories and myths. For example, according to the Soviet old school, you should not drink a lot while driving. But according to modern Western standards, you need to drink a lot and you shouldn’t get dehydrated. Many instructors come from the Soviet school and promote its values, so only personal experience will tell you who is right. I agree with Oleg that for lunch it’s just a snack, we always go this way and take tourists this way. This is justified, since in the middle of the day, as a rule, there is no time to start cooking.

Classic breakfast, lunch and dinner on a hike
The classic writing technique is quite modest and looks something like this for a large group.
- Breakfast. Porridge from cereals or flakes with raisins, biscuits with cheese or sausage, tea/coffee/cocoa.
- Lunch-snack. Biscuits with cheese or sausage, dried fruits and nuts, energy bars.
- Lunch at the camp. Soup + biscuits with something, tea.
- Dinner. Cereal porridge with stew, biscuits with cheese or sausage, tea.
Of course, for a small group the menu can be varied. For a large one for 15-20 people, it’s quite complicated. In a small group, to quickly prepare breakfast and dinner, it is convenient to use packaged cereals (such as Uvelka), which just need to be poured with boiling water.

What's best for a midday snack?
For a one-day hike, creating a “delicious” snack menu is not difficult. For a multi-day hike, it is quite monotonous and differs only in chocolate bars.
- biscuits with hard cheese or raw smoked sausage;
- dried fruits and nuts;
- candied fruit;
- energy bars (Mars, Snickers, Bounty, Twix, etc.).
Meals on long hikes
First of all, how will the layout of a weekend hike differ from, say, a week-long mountain trekking? That's right - weight! And taking extra pounds with you is an unacceptable luxury here! Therefore, on its trips, the PIK tourist club uses high-quality freeze-dried mixtures of vegetables for soups. And in some cases, as, for example, on some trips to Kamchatka - freeze-dried meat instead of classic stew.
We will look at the hiking menu for a standard 7-10 days using the table as an example. The layout in this case is made cyclically with repetition every 5 days. This way we get a complete diet without a feeling of monotony, as well as the possibility of using it for any duration of the hike.
Layout for 10 days (clicking on the photo will open the table in a new tab)
Tourist club PIK respects your food preferences. When filling out the pre-camping questionnaire, be sure to mention any food allergies you have, if any. If there are more than 5 vegetarians in a multi-day trekking group, the layout is supplemented with canned vegetables and additional portions of cheese for lunch and dinner.
It is worth noting that the menu on the tour club’s trips is quite varied and depends on the direction, type of trip (rafting, climbing, trekking, cycling), time of year and the possibility of purchasing additional products along the route. On warm southern hikes, it is almost always possible to supplement the layout with fresh fruit. Some groups on Elbrus also have fresh vegetables and fruits on the menu. And in active author’s tours it is sometimes completely different from the standard one.
And that’s not counting the gifts of nature! For example, in Turkey, pomegranates and oranges will be an invariable companion of your hiking diet, in Cyprus - juicy medlar and citrus fruits in all their diversity. Karelian blueberries, northern berries, Altai herbs, Caucasian strawberries and sea buckthorn. This list can be continued endlessly.
And this is if you are not hiking in Georgia... And you don’t end up visiting local residents along the way...

Subtleties of cooking
When camping, it is important to properly organize the cooking process. For convenience, duty groups of 2-3 people are formed to deal with organizational issues. Their responsibilities include:
- firewood collection;
- starting a fire;
- cooking;
- washing dishes.
The duty schedule is drawn up taking into account the number of travelers and the duration of the trip. As a rule, duty starts in the evening, and the next day the group changes.

Freeze-dried products
More than a dozen companies produce freeze-dried products in Russia.
During sublimation, most of the moisture is removed by vacuum, but all taste, color, minerals and trace elements are preserved. The weight of the products is reduced by 5-10 times. Next, everything is packaged in vacuum bags.
The range of products and ready-made dishes is quite wide, including freeze-dried pickles, sour cream, shrimp and omelettes.
“Proper” food on the track. What is “fast” and “slow sugar”
While hiking, our body needs quite a lot of energy. The main help here is provided by carbohydrates, which are contained in all foods, but play different roles. As soon as we eat something, “fast” or “slow” sugar immediately begins to enter the blood. “Fast sugar” gives an immediate burst of energy, while “slow” sugar comes gradually, over several hours, and steadily maintains our energy level.
- “Fast sugars” include many sweets, foods high in starch, cookies, and sweet fruits.
- “Slow sugars” include many cereals and cereals, pasta, non-starchy vegetables, mushrooms, and unsweetened fruits.
Boiled or baked vegetables have a higher glycemic index, meaning they contain more sugar than fresh ones.
When choosing food for your hike, focus on cereals, in particular buckwheat - this is an ideal source of energy and microelements. And the monotony of porridges is perfectly brightened up by spices and fire smoke.
Diet features
To avoid conflict situations along the route, it is better to plan meals during the hike in advance. Let's look at the main options:
- Breakfast
. In the morning, it is better to give preference to classic food - porridge or sandwiches with sausage and cheese. If you want something hot, an omelet or scrambled eggs will do. - Dinner
. It is advisable to eat something hot at the main meal. Liquid products are better absorbed by the body and quickly compensate for wasted energy. For quick preparation, you can use special soups in packs. In the latter case, be careful, use products from trusted manufacturers and carefully read the composition. - Dinner
. In the evening you can cook pasta, rice, buckwheat and lentils. Dry meat, cheese and vegetables go well with the finished dish.
During the day you need to drink hot drinks - tea or cocoa, which are poured into a thermos in the morning. Such drinks warm and tone the body. To quickly restore strength, it is recommended to include jelly in your diet. Chocolate, cookies and other sweets are suitable as an addition to hot drinks.
