How to assemble, pack and adjust a backpack for a hike

A novice tourist, having chosen and bought a backpack for himself, believes that all his problems are over. An experienced tourist knows that the problems are just beginning with the purchase of a backpack. How to pack for a hike? How to select which ones will definitely be needed, and which ones you can do without? How to properly pack all your equipment, clothes and food into a backpack? And finally, how can you adjust your backpack so that it doesn’t rub you anywhere, doesn’t interfere with your movement, and properly distributes the weight you carry? We will try to answer all these questions in our article.

“In my backpack there is lard and matches,

and Turgenev eight volumes..."

Alexey Kortnev and the group “Two Against the Wind”

As tourists joke: “In every backpack there is at least one extra thing.” And this statement is not far from the truth. How can you organize the process of packing for a hike so as not to forget to put all the necessary things in your backpack and not to cram a lot of unnecessary things into it “in reserve”?

You should start packing by making a list of what you will take on a hike. Regardless of the form in which you do this - on paper or in a text editor on a computer or smartphone - the list should include ALL the things you take with you. It is convenient to break them down into areas:

  • the big three (tent, sleeping bag, mat),
  • clothes, food,
  • climbing equipment,
  • items for cooking, KLMN (mug, spoon, bowl, knife),
  • personal hygiene items,
  • electrical equipment (flashlight, navigator, player, telephone, batteries and chargers), photo and video equipment
  • first aid kit and so on.

It makes sense to work hard once on compiling your complete personal list, save it and, when going on your next trip, just check it.

Start packing early, at least a few days before departure. Otherwise, there is a high chance that the very item that you had no doubt about will suddenly turn out to be faulty at the very last moment or you will not be able to find it at all. And, although, for example, the Moscow Kant store on Nagornaya is open until 24.00, the prospect of rushing there late in the evening five to six hours before departure to buy additional equipment may not appeal to everyone.

Cloth

Space in a backpack: from 1 to 4 points

During a classic multi-day hike, even at the preparation stage, divide all clothes into several categories according to seniority, that is, the higher the category, the higher this set of clothes will be in your backpack.

The first is the clothes you will wear for the first and, if possible, subsequent days of the hike. The second is a membrane set of jacket and trousers, which should not be hidden too far in case of bad weather. Warm clothes, spare dry linen and a change of clothes belong to the third category. And closing the camp wardrobe is the “ceremonial-weekend” wardrobe, the fourth set of clothes in which it is preferable to return home.

When packing warm clothes and a change of clothes at the end of a hike, it is very convenient to use compression bags, the air from which can be pumped out using a household vacuum cleaner. As an alternative, you can use waterproof bags that protect clothes from moisture and greatly simplify their packaging.

Laying fire equipment

To protect your other belongings from soot and soot, the pot and other fire equipment should be stored in a separate bag. It is also worth paying very close attention to such things as a flask for liquid fuel. If you use an alcohol or, especially, a gasoline burner, then it is better to store fuel for it not in an ordinary plastic bottle, but in special durable and sealed containers, for example, in these.

Dishes and kitchenware

Backpack space: 4

Stainless steel dishes and camp cutlery are most logical to put in a small pot. Considering that the weight of such a “hodgepodge” will be very significant, it is better to place this set closer to the back, taking the load off the shoulders.

When it comes to cooking fuel, experienced tourists often choose one of two options. Gas cylinders, which do not require special packaging and, due to their cylindrical shape, fit comfortably into any free cavity of a backpack, and liquid fuel. For the latter, you need to take care of a special container for storage and transportation, otherwise you risk getting rich buckwheat porridge with the aroma of gasoline and a change of clothes with car mechanic pheromones for dinner.

It is best to immerse the burner in a separate hermetic bag and place it separately from the main things due to the soiling of combustion products and the formation of soot. An additional cover for the burner is also strictly welcome.

Stowing hygiene items

It is convenient to place washing supplies, cosmetics, and small items in travel bags - small bags with many compartments. For example, the German company Deuter produces a whole line of such accessories in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes.

How to pack things

Once you have decided what things to put in your backpack and take on a hike, you need to understand how to properly pack a backpack on a hike. There are several rules.

  • At the bottom of the backpack, bulky items are placed that will not be needed on the road, but will only be needed in the parking lot. For example, a sleeping bag and warm clothes for an overnight stay.
  • The next layer in the center of the space and closer to the back is the heaviest. This method of styling allows you to properly distribute the load, relieving tension from the shoulders and neck.
  • Medium-weight items, such as food, fuel and kitchen utensils, are placed centrally around the heaviest items.
  • The next layer is light and fragile.
  • At the very top are the things you will need along the way.
  • It is advisable to put small things needed on a hike in the valve - a flashlight, a mug, matches, etc.
  • Place a set of membrane clothing or a raincoat in the side pocket. If it rains, you can quickly take it out and put it on.

Those who don’t know how to pack a backpack for a hike should remember about alignment. That is, things need to be placed evenly so that the backpack does not hang on one side. This applies to both the internal contents of the backpack and equipment that can be placed outside using carabiners and other fastening systems.

Rules for packing things in a backpack

Now let's talk about how to compactly put things in a backpack. One of the main advantages of hiking backpacks is the presence of devices for securing additional equipment. But even here it is important to distribute everything correctly. If you take a tent or a pot on a hike, then such items need to be attached to the top of the backpack. A lightweight travel mat can be secured at the bottom.

You should also think about packing the essentials - drinks, food, flashlight, map, raincoat and first aid kit. They can be stuffed into side pockets or placed in a special flap compartment, which is found in every hiking backpack. This way, when needed, you can quickly get them.

You should not put a camera in your backpack. Stopping, taking off your backpack and taking out a soap dish each time is a lengthy process; the sports group is probably unlikely to wait for you until you get it done. Place it in the pocket on the hip strap of your backpack.

We put all things (socks, T-shirts, sweaters, pants) into bags before putting them in the backpack. If you cross a river and accidentally tip your backpack into the water, they will remain dry. We do the same with food - we place it in sealed bags. To save space, you can cover it with cling film. It is better if you distribute the food into different bags, dividing it into one meal.

We put soft things on the back side, so during the hike you will not feel the discomfort that hard objects can create.
