Survival films
A huge number of programs are regularly filmed around the world, one way or another related to rescue during emergency situations. Perhaps you would like to watch a movie about survival on an island. Or events that happen to people who resist the elements. How will they behave? What will they do to avoid a fatal fate? This is a huge layer of documented events that are described in films about survival based on real events (Figure 1).
North and South Poles, wild taiga, impenetrable jungle, mountain ranges, desert dunes. Even at first glance, there is quite a wide scope for thought. Each of us has wanted at least once to go on a journey to distant lands.
Moral preparation is the most important aspect in rescue. It's easier to prepare for a danger that you've already seen at least once. Learn to get water in the desert, distinguish poisonous plants from edible ones, set snares for game of the north and south, get food in rocky deserts and protect yourself from the elements - and this is only the most basic set of skills.
Figure 1: Movies can help prepare you for survival in the wild
There are a huge number of nuances and little things that are difficult to foresee and even more difficult to overcome. For those who want to go into nature fully armed, survival guide films will help. But this does not mean that you will receive universal instructions for all occasions. Remember: a rescue movie is still a work of fiction, and reality will differ from what you see. You can find mind-bending films about survival (list of the best in good quality) in this article.

An Antarctic Tale (1983) 7.80
This story served as the impetus for the creation of the painting “White Captivity.” It is based on real events that happened in 1958 with the Japanese polar Antarctic expedition.
If in the case of “White Captivity” the evacuation happened during a trip to retrieve a meteorite that fell nearby, then the Japanese set off on an expedition, the purpose of which was to accurately determine the location of the Botnuten Hill.
That's when it all happened. Unexpected bad weather forced the entire group to hastily return at a time when the evacuation was already in full swing. And just as in the case of the American remake, there was not enough room for dogs on the first flight, and the second time the plane did not return, because the weather deteriorated even more, and there were problems with the ship.
If in that case there were only 8 dogs left in the snow of Antarctica, then here (and this was actually the case) people were forced to abandon as many as 15 animals to the mercy of fate. And one of them survived...
Let's watch the film and find out.

"Jungle"
Jungle, 2021, Australia, director – Greg McLean
Look
The film retells the true life story of Yossi Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), who traveled to Bolivia in search of adventure in the early 1980s. A young explorer, who dreams of exploring the impenetrable jungle and seeing wild tribes, finds his companions there: Markus, a Swedish teacher who is on vacation, and photographer Kevin, who wants to shoot a unique report and get with him in some National Geographic. Yossi also meets a mysterious guy who claims to know the jungle like the back of his hand and volunteers to be a guide on a dangerous hike.
The guys set off in search of a unique local tribe - the path to it, of course, is not close, and the road is far from easy. But teamwork in difficult conditions turns out to be almost more difficult than the trek through the jungle itself: the heroes begin to irritate each other and make a clearly short-sighted decision - to split up. As a result, Yossi finds himself alone in the battle with the wayward Amazon. For more than three weeks he wanders through the jungle, eats whatever he can, fights strange insects and begins to slowly go crazy - but does not lose the will to live.
A bonus to this whole exciting story is colorful Bolivia with all its crazy landscapes, mountain towns, villages and colorful holidays.
"Lost in the Ice"
Arctic, 2021, Iceland, director – Joe Penna
Look
In the center of the story is a small man against the big north. After a plane crash, the pilot is left completely alone in the middle of endless snow. He makes some kind of home for himself in the wreckage of an aircraft, fishes in an ice hole and desperately sends SOS signals. One day he notices a helicopter in the sky - hurray, salvation has arrived! But the helicopter gets caught in a snowstorm and crashes: the pilot dies, and his partner is wounded and very weak. The hero decides that he is now responsible not only for himself and sets off on a difficult journey to the base, to which he must walk for several days through the icy desert. It seems that the audience also goes through this path: the movie is very quiet and drawn-out, and each scene increases the feeling of hopelessness and doom.
“Lost in the Ice” is a film about fortitude and nobility. It is also a very intense, but at the same time life-affirming story that makes you believe that a person is capable of overcoming much more difficult trials than he thinks.
"Everest. Achieving the impossible"
Beyond the Edge, 2013, New Zealand, director – Leanne Pooley
Look
In 1953, the race to conquer Everest began. At that time, no one knew for sure whether a person could even survive at an altitude of more than eight thousand meters: everyone who decided to climb pushed the boundaries of the possible. Humble New Zealand beekeeper Edmund Hillary launched the most ambitious climb in history - the subject of this documentary. If you don't have enough inspiring stories about overcoming, press play.
"Kon-Tiki"
Kon-Tiki, 2012, Norway, directors – Espen Sandberg, Joakim Renning
Look
Norwegian researcher Thor Heyerdahl hypothesized that the first settlers came to Polynesia not from Asia, as was commonly believed, but from South America. To do this, ancient people had to overcome the vast Pacific Ocean on primitive rafts. The scientist devoted ten years of his life to studying this issue, but the scientific community did not support the hypothesis: no one believed that ancient people were able to swim across the ocean. Then Tour decided to prove he was right to the whole world. To do this, he went to Peru, gathered a team of like-minded people, built a raft and went to the open sea on it (and he didn’t even know how to swim!). On the way, the team had to face huge whales and sharks, survive a storm and encounter sharp reefs. But on the 101st day of sailing, they finally reached the paradise shore of Polynesia.
By the way, this film is not the first film interpretation of the famous expedition: the documentary film “Kon-Tiki”, which was shot by the expedition participants themselves, was released in 1949 and even won an Oscar.
"6 Feet Under"
6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain, 2021 USA, director – Nathan Furst
Look
Another film based on real events. The main character is former hockey star Eric Lemarque. He was once a champion, but now he is just an unemployed man with problems with illegal substances. He goes to a ski resort to clear his head a little. One morning, rescuers announce that a terrible snow storm is approaching, but Eric, being high, ignores the call to be careful and decides to go down the closed track. Already at the bottom he realizes that he is lost - all traces are covered up, and around there are only silent mountains and cold.
Eric spent seven very difficult days in the mountains. When he wanted to give up, he remembered his sports past - which was also not easy. When rescuers found him, he could hardly move: both legs were so frostbitten that they had to be amputated. However, Eric was able to move on from this, gave up bad habits, opened a business and even started snowboarding again.
"About Horses and People"
Hross í oss, 2013, Iceland, director – Benedikt Erlingsson
Look
“Of Horses and People” is several stories of relationships between different people and noble animals, combined into a coherent narrative. The story of an enthusiastic tourist who gets separated from the group, gets caught in a snowstorm and almost freezes to death somewhere in the wilderness is not the main one in this film, but definitely one of the most impressive and piercing to the core.
The sometimes absurd movie with dark notes of Scandinavian humor proves that animals and people (with their mundane aspirations) are still very similar. And “Of Horses and Men” is simply very beautiful: for an hour and a half you will admire the serene Icelandic landscapes, each of which is worthy of becoming a photo wallpaper.
"In White Captivity"
Into the White, 2012, Norway, director – Petter Ness
Look
The year is 1940, and there is a battle between German and British troops for control of Norwegian territories. In one of the air battles, both enemy crews are shot down. German pilots find a lonely hunting hut in the middle of a raging snowstorm, and after some time their sworn enemies, the British, also get there. To survive in harsh conditions, both sides have to sacrifice their principles and unite in battle against a common enemy - the inexorable elements. This movie is much deeper than just another story about survival in the snow - it is a film about the victory of humanity over ideology.

From birth, Amundsen was simply obsessed with the Arctic and the thirst for discovering unknown and inaccessible lands. He succeeded what Franklin failed to do - open the Northwest Passage. He accomplished what Scott could not accomplish - to be the first to the South Pole and return from there safe and sound.
And although the film is more of a biopic, telling about his entire life, and not about any specific expedition, there is plenty of the Arctic in it. Moreover, both northern and southern.

Icebreaker (2016) 6.50
The second Russian film to be included in the list of the best films about the Arctic and Antarctic. The film, according to “Wikipedian experts,” is partly based on real events. In particular, the writers of the script took as a basis the events that happened with the icebreaker called “Mikhail Somov”, which was pinched by Arctic ice and forced to drift for four and a half months (133 days).
In this interpretation, there are very tense relations among the management of the icebreaker, under the pressure of which (or perhaps due to their lack of experience or mediocrity), some in power make a number of wrong decisions, leading to the ship being captured in ice.
How to survive 133 days among the ice at a time when the passions on board are increasingly heated? We will only find out by watching the entire film, which can be viewed in the public domain simply by entering its name into a search engine on Yandex.
