What is determination and why is it so important for success?

Definition

If we look into the encyclopedic dictionary, we will see the following definition.

Purposefulness is a positive moral-volitional quality of an individual, which manifests itself in the form of the ability to set clear and achievable tasks and goals.

That is, determination is the concentration of feelings, thoughts and actions on persistent movement towards one’s goal and its achievement.

In your own words, a purposeful person is someone who:

  • knows exactly what he wants;
  • understands how high the probability is that the goal will be achieved;
  • knows how to keep the final goal in mind and not switch to something else;
  • has strong convictions that he will not give up even under pressure from circumstances;
  • systematically moves towards the realization of his task, regardless of obstacles.

What destroys determination

A person who lives aimlessly and has no motivation will not be able to build a happy future. Very often people are lazy, and therefore they have no desire to achieve greater heights than they currently have.

Sometimes people are frightened by obstacles, and they “give up” and refuse to fight for a better life. Remember: victory can only come from the person who knows how to fight.

Self-doubt destroys a person’s sense of purpose. Therefore, before you set a goal, you need to learn to believe in your strengths and in the success that will certainly crown your efforts.

Qualities of a purposeful person

When they talk about determination, they mean a number of psychological qualities:

  1. Discipline. This is a character trait that gives a person the ability to plan his activities and strictly adhere to this plan. Ability to set priorities and consistently resolve emerging issues.
  2. Determination. Carries the skill to independently, timely and competently make responsible decisions and persistently implement them.
  3. Hard work. A trait that manifests itself in a person’s positive attitude towards the work process.
  4. Self-control. Allows you to achieve goals by taking control of your emotions, thoughts and behavior. The ability to not succumb to momentary temptations, keeping the true goal and values in mind.
  5. Persistence. The ability to overcome all difficulties and not stray from the intended path when faced with possible obstacles. This quality can be compared to the first steps of a child who falls and gets up every time to continue his attempts.
  6. Strength of will. Consciously activated energy within the individual, which is directed towards achieving the desired result.
  7. Mindfulness. This is the perception of reality here and now, the ability to notice and recognize what attention is directed to.

Strength of will

This is also an important quality that a person should have. Only through willpower can you achieve your goal. Very often a person gets tired of achieving something, then it’s time to show willpower, without which it is impossible to achieve what you want.

Such people are able to overcome any difficulties that arise along the way. Willpower helps people reach new heights. Therefore, develop this quality. To do this, psychologists advise doing what you don’t want: for a child to learn homework and clean the room, for an adult to learn an English lesson instead of watching “House-2”.

Examples from life

Determination can manifest itself in any area and undertaking: business, sports, education, etc. This character trait helps to quickly achieve results and improve your standard of living, for example:

  • a purposeful person achieves great results in his professional activities, quickly climbs the career ladder, receiving recognition from management and material incentives;
  • in sports, such a person quickly achieves good results and takes prizes in competitions;
  • determination helps to maintain motivation in studies and master new material more effectively;
  • in creativity, this quality helps to bring the work started to the end: complete a painting, write a book, a piece of music, etc.

Determination is often confused with fanaticism. But it's not the same thing. I will explain the fundamental difference between them with an example.

Imagine two people going to the gym to gain muscle mass. One is raving about the results and doesn’t get off the exercise machines all night long. Another clearly set a course for getting himself in order for the summer season, regularly attends training, not forgetting about other areas of his life - family, work, leisure.

What is the difference? A fanatic limits himself to any pleasure and cannot think about anything other than his goal. For a purposeful person, his task is also important; he keeps it in his head and gradually moves towards it, but at the same time maintains his sanity and can make adjustments to his route if circumstances require it.

Examples of determination can be seen in the autobiography of any successful person. Let's remember the story of Li Ka-shing - the richest man in China and one of the most influential investors in Asia. At the age of 12, he was left as the only breadwinner in the family and was forced to quit his studies and put up with any hard work.

The only thing the father left behind to his son was a love of learning and determination. Ka-Shing set himself the goal of becoming a rich man and did not stop studying in his free time. Now we can see the fruits of his perseverance.

The importance of determination in different spheres of people’s lives

Possessing this quality makes it possible to obtain good results in all areas of human life. For example,

  • Professional perseverance and the will to win make it possible to achieve a wonderful career, improve your professional performance, and become successful in business, science, sports, and hobbies.
  • In learning, the pursuit of a goal allows you to master more information, learn new things, gain knowledge and skills necessary for further growth and development.
  • In raising children, perseverance gives a chance to instill in children a love of knowledge, sports, a healthy lifestyle, etc.
  • The will to win is an indispensable quality for survival in difficult or extreme conditions.
  • Is it necessary to talk about determination in the case of fighting diseases, especially in cases where not only a person’s health, but also his life depends on the will to win?

Is it possible to develop this quality?

In psychology, determination has a dual nature. To a certain extent, this personality quality can be inherent in us from birth, just like temperament. In this case, one would assume that goal-oriented parents would have similar children. But this is not entirely true.

If you do not make some efforts and do not use the right methods of education, the necessary inclinations will remain untapped potential.

Purposefulness is fully acquired with experience, environment, education and self-education.

Let's consider how to develop it in yourself and what methods there are for this.

We use the SMART method

The name of the method was given by the first letters of the words specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timed, which respectively means specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, correlated with time.

Achieving a goal directly depends on how well it meets these five characteristics. For example, if we set ourselves the goal of earning money for a new car in a month, then it will be doomed to failure in advance, unless, of course, we accidentally win the lottery. The goal of quickly losing 20 kg without compromising your health will be equally unrealistic.

Setting unattainable and unrealistic goals means dooming yourself to failure in advance.

How to become purposeful

One of the main reasons for undeveloped determination is banal laziness, which, in turn, is born from a lack of motivation. Why are we not motivated enough? Most likely because we chose our target incorrectly.

This is where a frequent problem arises when we give up on something we started halfway through and become disappointed in the task at hand and in ourselves.

Therefore, the first milestone that is important to pass on the path to becoming purposeful is making the right choice. He will set you up for a long and persistent struggle for your goal.

To understand what is true for you and what is false, that is, imposed by society, you should listen to yourself more often, study yourself, your thoughts and desires.

You can read about how to set goals correctly in the article.

Thus, choosing the right goal is already half the battle on the path to determination. But what to do next?

  1. Believe in yourself. Often, self-doubt prevents us from achieving results. Obstacles and competition frighten you, you give up and the initial passion disappears. Remember that there is no victory without struggle, and the one who walks will master the road.
  2. Learn to prioritize. In order not to scatter your energy, you need to be able to distinguish the important from the unimportant, the urgent from what can wait, and also get rid of activities that can be called a waste of time.
  3. Plan. It is difficult to achieve a goal when there is no clear action plan. Break big tasks into smaller ones and allow yourself breaks.
  4. Learn to concentrate. This means reacting less to irritating factors and constantly keeping the main goal in mind. Don't waste time on things that don't fit into the master plan.
  5. Come up with ways to motivate. Some people are helped by visualization, others imagine the moment of achieving the goal and their feelings at the same time. Try rewarding yourself for taking small steps.
  6. Overcome your own weaknesses. Not everyone is ready to develop. Many strive to be better than others, but the one who can surpass himself always wins. Test the boundaries of your comfort zone and go a millimeter beyond its limits. And so on step by step.

Determination

Only perseverance and determination are omnipotent.
Calvin Coolidge

Being a purposeful person is incredibly rewarding! After all, when a person has a clear and clear goal in life, which he strives to achieve with all his might, then no matter what difficulties he has to face in life, he will definitely overcome them. Determination is a character trait that gives a person strength and confidence by bringing meaning to his life. After all, the easier it is for you to overcome any difficulties in life and achieve success in absolutely any undertaking, the more understanding you have of why you are doing it. Therefore, anyone who wants to significantly improve their life, both materially and spiritually, should develop determination in themselves. And I, dear readers, will tell you in detail how this can be done in this article.

What is determination

First of all, let's find out what determination is. You can find out without me that this is a strong-willed quality of personality, expressed in a person’s ability to set goals and a conscious desire to achieve them at any cost. Much has been written about this. I suggest you look at this quality from the other side - from the level of human development at which this quality becomes inevitable. For me, determination is, first of all, the order of thinking, the discipline of the mind and a more or less complete understanding by a person of the general picture of the world. Because any goal that a person sets for himself is his choice. And it is extremely important that this choice be as conscious as possible. After all, such a choice is a choice in favor of one thing and at the same time to the detriment of something else. That is, by setting one goal for ourselves, we abandon other goals. After all, we cannot follow all the roads at the same time - we choose only one road along which we will go, to which we will devote our lives. Of course, if we wish, we can turn away from it, but in this case we will not reach the end, the intended goal, and we will spend the time of our lives striving for it. So, in order for the choice of a life goal, and possibly several goals that do not contradict each other, to be correct, a person needs to be aware of all its complexity.

If you want to become a purposeful person, you must be confident in your life goals. It is very important! Therefore, approach choosing your life goal with all seriousness! Imagine that you have set a goal for yourself based on certain knowledge that you have and beliefs that you hold. Then you began to strive towards this goal and even managed to achieve some results. But then it turned out that this goal turned out to be, not even false, but not entirely correct, not the best, not what you really need from life. When you set it before yourself - it seemed to you that you were making the only right choice, that there was nothing complicated in it - you choose what you want to achieve and begin the actions necessary for this achievement. But in reality, it turned out that the choice is much more difficult than you thought, and now your goal partially or completely does not meet your interests. This is the result of an incorrectly set goal. I have often encountered this in my practice, which is why I focus your attention on choosing a goal.

Perhaps you will say that what is so tragic here is, well, let’s say you chose a not entirely correct goal for yourself, having insufficient information about life, but you can always set a new goal and start striving for it. And it seems that there really is nothing wrong with the fact that your first goal turned out to be not entirely correct, no. You simply make a different choice, set a new goal and start striving for it again. But let's think about how such a change in goals will affect your psychology. After all, this is the same turning off the road that I wrote about above. And I’ll tell you what will happen to you in this case. You may not immediately, but over time, begin to doubt the correctness of your second goal, at least a little, but you will begin. I assure you that you will start. And these doubts will shake your faith in ultimate success, your faith in yourself, your faith in your ability to correctly set goals and ability to achieve them. This, in turn, will lead to you becoming less resistant to various kinds of difficulties that will inevitably stand in your way of achieving your goal. Moreover, the more ambitious your goal is, the more difficulties you will need to overcome on the way to it. And if you doubt yourself, if your self-confidence is not strong enough, how will you overcome these difficulties? So, friends, goals need to be set very wisely, both tactical and strategic. An incorrectly set goal, even if it is achieved, will lead a person to complete disappointment - it will kill his sense of purpose. This has been verified by the experience of many people.

There is another point associated with incorrect goal setting - this is the habit of quitting something you have started, doubting its feasibility and thereby justifying your reluctance to go to the end and achieve success at any cost. Having set yourself the wrong goal and become convinced over time that it is wrong or not quite right, you will abandon it and begin to set a new goal for yourself, based on a broader idea of life. So, the key word here is “refuse.” It can be compared to the word “give up,” because no matter how justified your refusal of your goal is, you will nevertheless experience disappointment, both from your own choice and from the unattained result, if it seemed very attractive to you. This is a defeat. And it can take hold in the subconscious, or even in the consciousness of a person, which in turn means that he will get used to losing. But this is definitely a bad habit, this is a very harmful habit for a person. It cannot be allowed to develop within us.

Thus, friends, I repeat - for me, determination is, in addition to order in thinking and discipline of the mind, also a correctly made choice, which sets a person up for a long and persistent struggle for his goal. And since making the right choice is not easy, I advise you not to rush into it. I have helped and continue to help many people set the right goals in life and then competently and methodically achieve them. And I must say that this is a very difficult task, even for me, as a specialist. I know more about life than some of my clients whom I help determine their life purpose. I collect a lot of information about these people, I find out about their capabilities, desires, skills and much more, before advising them to set this or that goal. And all the same, I have to double-check all my calculations several times in order to say with absolute certainty that it is advisable for this particular person to strive for such and such a goal. I don’t want him, having gone part of the way, sometimes more than half, to suddenly discover that all this time he has been striving for the wrong goal, which is really important to him, that he was wasting his time and energy on things that were unnecessary to him, instead in order to strive for what is truly important and valuable to him. This will kill all the enthusiasm in a person, and it can go out for a very long time, perhaps even for the rest of his life. And since I have witnessed this several times, I believe that setting the right goal is much more important than the goal itself. This is a very serious and responsible job, because, as a rule, it concerns a person’s entire life. I didn’t come to this right away, I also had to make mistakes by setting the wrong goals for myself, but the main thing is that in the end I managed to realize this truth. Therefore, it is important for you to take a very responsible approach to any fateful choice in your life, so that you don’t regret anything later, but, on the contrary, have an excellent attitude towards achieving all your goals.

There are people who have adhered to some false idea all their lives and, starting from it, followed an incorrect goal that does not meet their interests, or even a completely unattainable goal. But having realized its incorrectness and unattainability, they decided not to abandon it, so as not to make a large part of their life meaningless, but preferred to deceive themselves, proving to themselves and others that it was not their goals that turned out to be false and incorrect, but that other people simply do not understand what they understand. This is even worse than admitting to yourself that you are wrong. Such stubbornness leads a person to a dead end in which he will leave himself for the rest of his days, remaining dissatisfied with both himself and life in general. It is better to maneuver, it is better to switch from one goal to another, if it was not possible to immediately set the right goal, than to resist like this and live out your life in a negative mental state. Therefore, friends, please pay attention to the fact that stubbornness has nothing to do with determination. It is necessary to be persistent when achieving a worthy goal, it is useful. But to be stubborn and insist on your own, knowing full well about your own delusion, is stupid and pointless. It is better to ask for help from someone who has more extensive knowledge and richer life experience to help you navigate life.

How to develop determination

But now that you and I have found out that determination is, in addition to mental discipline, a competent choice in favor of a specific goal and at the same time to the detriment of other goals, and only then the manifestation of will and a method for achieving one’s goals, let’s talk with you about how to develop this sense of purpose. I recommend starting small. And this is natural. No serious business can be done at once, just as it is impossible to eat an elephant whole. It is necessary to act gradually, mastering those things that a person is currently able to master. What can you master? You need to develop character, resilience, patience and perseverance, as these will form the basis of your determination.

Therefore, you are quite capable of starting by planning, say, your day and achieving non-essential goals that nevertheless require a certain discipline and perseverance. Let's say you can first plan your day and set yourself a number of simple goals that you will need to achieve during the day. If you achieve them, or rather, when you achieve them, you will need to start planning things for the week, setting yourself goals that you need to achieve during this time. Then start planning things for the month and set goals for yourself for a month, then for two months, then for three months, then for six months, a year and so on. That is, you must gradually accustom yourself to always understand where and why you are moving. This way you will bring more meaning into your life. You will know exactly what exactly, why and within how long you need to achieve. So start developing your sense of purpose by setting small goals that you need to achieve in short periods of time, and then increase the goals and stretch out the time during which you need to achieve them, based on the corresponding calculations.

The next thing you need is the ability to specify your goals. You must clearly understand what exactly you want. So, some of my clients, turning to me for help, can tell me in detail about their problem, but at the same time, it is very difficult for them to answer the question of what and why they want. It is difficult for them to abstract themselves from their problem and concentrate on their desires. But often the problem with which they come to me does not fundamentally contradict their goals and desires. It can be an unpleasant side effect for people, which actually accompanies any desires, but at the same time it does not contradict this desire itself, but rather harmonizes with it very well. But due to people’s inability to specify their desires and goals, problems arise in their lives, or more precisely, in their heads, and in their struggle they struggle with their own desires and goals. Therefore, friends, always, hear, always set yourself the most specific goals possible, even if they are vague in their integral structure - this is acceptable, but those, let's say, subgoals that make up the main goal, or rather the path to it - you must be clearly and clearly formulated. Because it is they, these subgoals that will help you move towards the main goal. They are the ones who will tell you what you must do today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow. Think as much as possible about what and why you want. You must clearly understand what you need to do right now to bring yourself closer to your goal. And this is best understood when you break your desire into several stages that you need to go through in order to realize it.

Imagine yourself as a genie who has been released from the bottle and made a wish. Imagine that a person asks you to make him happy, what will you do? Without knowing what this person understands by happiness, you will proceed from your subjective ideas about happiness and may fulfill this person’s desire differently than he himself wants. And in order to correctly fulfill this desire, you must understand it. And in order to understand it, it must be explained to you. Here - explain to yourself your desires and goals so that they become as clear and specific as possible for you, then the path to them will become much brighter.

How to achieve goals

A significant point in the development of determination is a person’s idea of how to achieve goals. From this idea follows both the goal that a person sets for himself and the method of achieving it. I already explained some of this above when I talked about how to develop a sense of purpose, but now let's see what else we, you, need to know about achieving goals.

Optimism . Of course, a person must be an optimist in order to set himself up to achieve his goals and systematically achieve them. However, although excessive optimism in this matter is useful, as it energizes and gives confidence, it may not be effective in the long run. It's like sugar, which increases blood glucose levels and thus stimulates brain activity only for a short time. Therefore, it is important not so much to be optimistic when setting a goal, but rather to be calculating. The more distant the goal, the more thorough the calculation must be. Positive emotions and optimism will be needed later, during tactical actions, when it will be necessary to overcome numerous steps towards the goal. But strategic thinking should be as cold as possible.

Mistakes and failures . The attitude towards mistakes and failures should be calm. It is important to understand here that achieving your goals does not mean doing everything right all the time and winning small victories always and in everything. It often happens that a person suffers one failure after another, striving for his goal, but this does not push him away, but, on the contrary, brings him closer to it. After all, even when receiving a negative experience, a person learns about which of his actions turned out to be incorrect and, in accordance with this knowledge, changes his tactics. The main thing, I repeat, is clarity, accuracy and correctness of the goal, and the methods of achieving it can always be changed, depending on the circumstances. Therefore, if you make mistakes and fail, do not make a problem out of it so that it does not suppress your spirit. Just look for other ways to achieve what you want to achieve and you will achieve it. Don't let difficulties break you.

Persistence . In continuation of the above, I would like to add that a purposeful person must have perseverance. Even if your character is weak, it can be fixed - the main thing is not to give up, striving for your goal. Through snot, tears, pain, suffering, failures and defeats - you must move towards your goal in order to achieve it. The secret is that persistence is often, very often rewarded with success, and to be persistent, you need to be persistent, and to be persistent, you just need to not give up, trying to achieve success in one thing or another until it is achieved . That is, it is important to understand that success in every business is often achieved after several attempts and the one who makes these attempts wins. And the one who gives up loses. So don't give up.

Difficulty of the goal . The goal you set for yourself should be challenging enough that you have to work hard to achieve it. Above, I wrote that it is necessary to begin developing a sense of purpose in yourself by setting small goals, that is, starting small, gradually accustoming yourself to achieving more serious goals stretched out over time. But at the same time, you must understand that your goals should not be too low, because they will not be able to properly load you. And without load there will be no development. After all, if you set a goal for yourself that does not imply overcoming at least some obstacles, then this means that either your goal is unrealistic and is simply your fantasy, a dream, or it is so insignificant, so insignificant that it makes absolutely no sense. As a result, you either remain inactive, dreaming of one day realizing your dream, or you act, but with the minimum effort necessary to achieve frivolous, uncomplicated goals. So you can train yourself all your life to achieve goals, but you will never achieve a single significant goal. But the whole beauty of determination lies precisely in overcoming difficulties. Now we are not talking about desires that a person can carry in his head all his life, we are talking about a goal that encourages a person to strive for it, and not just dream about it. That is, this shouldn’t happen when people say, “I dream of achieving such and such a goal.” You don't have to dream - you have to strive. Say - I am striving for such and such a goal, and in order to achieve it I have already done such and such. Do you understand what the point is? In action, in activity, in work. To dream, we all dream, and such people are called dreamers. And we are talking about a purposeful person - who does not dream, but acts. And of course, you shouldn’t waste your life on children’s games. Start with small goals, but be sure to move on to big, challenging goals that require years of hard work to achieve. You must subject yourself to stress - mental, psychological, physical - in order to develop, and not get what you want at the snap of your fingers. So make sure that your goals are realistic and challenging enough, these are the kind of goals that make our lives interesting and fill it with meaning.

Focus . Some books advise you to focus on your goal and strive for it without losing sight of it. I have tried this technique on myself and on other people, and I must say that it is not entirely correctly formulated. You should not focus on your goal, you should constantly remember it, you should not forget it. But you need to focus on the steps that you currently need to take in order to start or continue moving towards your goal. I think this approach to focusing on your goal is more correct. I fully admit and even consider it inevitable that some loss of sight of the main goal is inevitable when a person is actively immersed in solving his current problems. After all, what does it mean to be constantly focused on a goal - it’s the same as walking towards it without looking at your feet. So you can trip. Therefore, sometimes you can and should lower your head, or rather, return from the beautiful distance to the real present and concentrate and with full dedication solve current problems and tasks that need to be solved in order to get closer to your distant goal.

Faith . A person’s faith in himself and his goal plays a very important role in this matter. As I wrote at the very beginning, the goal must be correct, one to which you can devote your whole life. Or part of life - if we are talking about one of the goals you want to achieve. If the goal is correct, thoughtful, desired and really very necessary, you will believe in it. If there are doubts about its relevance, this will shake your faith, both in your goal and in yourself. Therefore, in order to believe in your goal, goals, I repeat - approach their choice with all seriousness and responsibility.

Motivation . It is clear that to constantly pursue your goals you need motivation, good motivation. As a matter of fact, the goal itself, if it is worthy and set correctly enough, motivates a person very well. You wouldn’t set yourself a goal that’s unattractive to you, right? But if your main goal is sufficiently distant, or at least so difficult, that it will inevitably take time to achieve it, then it is extremely important to maintain good, strong motivation throughout this time. How to do it? You need to pay attention to those emotions that most motivate you to do something. The right emotions infect with energy, and they are right when they encourage action. At the same time, it is absolutely not necessary that these are exclusively positive emotions; they can also be negative, in the form of anger, malice, and even in the form of resentment and fear.

It is believed that positive emotions motivate a person to action better than negative ones. But it is not always the case. Different people have different life experiences - some people live in such luxurious conditions that they do not know fear and pain, which they want to get rid of with all their might. But they are full of all sorts of desires, and they are ready to do anything to satisfy them. In this case, you can motivate yourself by thinking about the pleasure you will experience when you achieve your goals. Other people, and according to my observations the majority, grow up in an environment in which, to one degree or another, there are: fear, pain, anger, injustice, restrictions, suffering, dissatisfaction, and in some cases, cruelty. Such people want completely different things in life. Therefore, the capabilities of different people are different. And that’s why everyone’s motivation is different. Therefore, each person requires an individual approach, including in terms of motivation.

Confidence . A purposeful person is usually quite confident in himself. He knows exactly what he wants from life and why, and he strives for it, regardless of any obstacles or opinions of other people. His understanding of the meaningfulness of each of his actions, as well as faith in the correctness of the chosen path, helps him survive even the most unfavorable moments in his life. Failure in tactical matters is more than compensated for by faith in strategic success. This is why purposeful people are so unbending and self-confident. The meaning of life makes them stronger. Moreover, the more significant the goal that a person wants to achieve, the stronger it makes him. Understanding why you need to get out of bed every morning and do something, including what you don’t really like to do, what is difficult for you to do, you feel your exclusivity. People, by the way, also feel this, so they are drawn to a purposeful person, and sometimes make him their idol. Strength has always been respected in this world, and determination is a manifestation of strength. Therefore, friends, develop self-confidence and set ambitious goals for yourself, so that the pursuit of them will make you even more self-confident people.

Doubts . But you should deal with doubts very carefully, on the one hand, not allowing them to stop you, and on the other, listening to them. Sometimes a purposeful person has well-founded doubts as to whether he should or should not strive for his goal, sacrifice something for it, give up something, do something for it. Many people have this feeling, and the desire to get something, to achieve something, to achieve something may disappear. Yesterday you wanted this, but today you no longer want it. What to do in this case? Well, firstly, it’s worth saying that if a person has really lost interest in the initially chosen goal, then this indicates that his goal was not entirely correct. I wrote about this above. Desire and goal are somewhat different things. A goal is still a more meaningful choice by a person of what he wants. Whereas desire is more of an emotion that is there today but not tomorrow. Therefore, I strongly do not recommend setting medium and long-term goals while being emotionally excited. These are the goals that will definitely go out quickly.

Above, I wrote that goal setting is not an easy task, requiring a competent approach and a broad outlook on life. Therefore, I do not advise you to rush into setting a goal for life, so as not to be disappointed in it later. To begin with, set smaller and simpler goals, but meaningful ones, and ones that you will need to work hard to achieve. Better yet, turn to wise, experienced, thinking people for help - ask them to help you decide on your life goal. Such people already know what is true and what is false, what makes sense to strive for and what does not. They will help you deal with this issue, without compromising your interests.

And secondly, as for doubts regarding the correctness of the chosen goal, then keep in mind that if the goal is correct, thoughtful, adequate, meets your interests and is relevant in time, if competent people helped you choose it from among other goals, then you need just wait, endure, until your desire to achieve this goal becomes strong again. A person’s psycho-emotional state is never stable, so anything can happen. This is not a reason to change everything, ruin all plans, abandon previously set goals and start setting new ones. So, friends, develop a sense of purpose in yourself so that you can live a more meaningful life, which, thanks to this meaning, will become much happier.

How to raise sense of purpose in a child

Earlier I mentioned that determination is largely determined by proper upbringing. Regardless of what genes are in the child and what environment will shape his personality in the future, the primary criterion in upbringing is always the parents.

How to make sure your child grows up purposeful? He should see a similar example of behavior. If a parent spends hours lecturing about how important it is to reach a goal, but at the same time retreats from completing their tasks at the first obstacle, there will be no point.

The child must not only know how to do it, but also have before his eyes the practical application of this knowledge using the example of his main authorities - his parents.

So the advice is simple. To raise a purposeful child, develop self-control and willpower, make specific plans and always achieve them. And the child will follow your example.

How to determine the time frame for achieving a goal

The key point at the beginning of the journey is to determine an adequate balance of forces to specify the exact time frame for achieving the goal.

You cannot set the bar too high and try to complete a complex task in the shortest possible time. In this case, the body may respond: blues, lack of diligence and abandonment of further goals.

We are engaged in visualization

In short, we can say that it is a mental representation of the desired goal as if we had already achieved it. Before practicing visualization, it is worth mastering muscle relaxation, proposed by the American doctor E. Jacobson - it will help relieve emotional and muscle tension that prevents you from focusing on visualization.

In addition, pictures and photographs with objects of our desires depicted on them or reminiscent of them, which can be hung in a visible place, will intensify our actions.
