Through the years, through generations: who still watches TV today and why?

Not so long ago, television was the central point of family leisure. And serious battles were fought for the right to own the remote control and the ability to select a program. But time passes, technology develops along with it, and today we can say with confidence that television has significantly lost its popularity. Why do people stop watching TV in large numbers? Let's figure it out.

Harm from prolonged viewing of TV without light

Ophthalmologists say that not only simply watching TV for a long time is harmful to the eyes, but also using it in the dark. The following negative effects appear:

  • lack of periodic accommodation of the lens at long and near distances, which subsequently leads to a decrease in its functionality;
  • excessive tension on the muscles that are responsible for the accommodation of the pupil (the effect is formed due to the constant flickering of the TV screen, which intensifies in the dark);
  • elimination of all retinal capabilities due to the lack of use of different contrasts for recognizing small objects.

Watching TV for a long time is harmful both in the light and in the dark. But in the latter case, more strain on the eyes occurs. This is due to the fact that a person cannot adapt to bright light: there is darkness around the person, and there is bright light in front. This leads to overwork of the eyeball.

Impact on the psyche

Continuing to consider the pros and cons of TV, let's consider another negative impact of TV. Now there is practically no censorship. Therefore, on TV you can see: erotica, violence, theft, and so on. Okay, if you encounter a similar phenomenon once a month, but if it happens every day, then it is very harmful to the psyche.

As a result, when a person wants to relax after a hard day, he, on the contrary, receives a portion of negativity. This affects the mental state. Irritability appears. It is also possible that the same depression will appear.

Why is it harmful?

There are several reasons why watching TV is harmful, especially in the dark:

  • Rapid eye fatigue. Both the intraocular and surrounding muscles of vision are overstrained. The pupil periodically changes radius (sometimes wide, sometimes narrow). After just one hour of watching TV, your eyes get tired, and surrounding objects become difficult to see.
  • Glaucoma. The disease occurs when there is an increased load on the organ of vision in combination with increased secretion of intraocular fluid. If glaucoma forms, the cameras in the eyes press on the retina and optic nerve, causing dysfunction in these areas.
  • Load on the retina. Excessively bright light is refracted through the cornea and lens and projected onto the retina. If the beam has a high wavelength, it negatively affects the retina. There is a sharp pain that occurs inside the eyes.

Eye damage does not develop immediately, but gradually. To do this, a person needs to watch TV for a long time. Experiments have revealed that people who watch TV in the dark develop eye fatigue faster.

How to replace a TV and how to develop without it?

We have already found out why you should not watch TV. But what useful things can replace it?

I give some recommendations

1.Books Literature is an excellent replacement for constant melodramas on TV. If you want to dive headfirst into an exciting story, then a book is better than a TV series. Books contribute to:

  • broadening one's horizons;
  • increasing vocabulary;
  • increasing intelligence and literacy levels;
  • development of self-confidence.

In addition, books help you relax and be in a positive mood.

A separate story is books for self-development that motivate and help you believe in yourself. If you are interested in this, read the article: “Why do you need to read books and how to develop yourself with their help?”

2. Hobbies Think of something you enjoy that you can do in the evening. You don’t have to have any talent; you can learn something from scratch. This could be: design, drawing, handmade, cooking, modeling, puzzle. Such activities help develop imagination, relax, see the results of work and become more self-confident.

3. Communication If you turn on the TV so as not to sit in silence and not be lonely, it is better to replace it with live communication. Don't say that there are no friends or that they are all busy right now. You can always find new acquaintances. Combine business with pleasure: sign up for a section: dancing, sports, handicrafts, theater, etc. There you will learn new things and find friends.

4.Radio and films If you cannot do without external noise, for example, while cooking in the kitchen, turn on the radio. There is music playing there, but there is practically no news trash. Cinematography has not been canceled either. A good movie is the same as a good book. But not a series, but a film. And it is advisable to watch the disc so that there are no advertisements. Yes, and don’t overdo it. You shouldn't watch three films in a row, otherwise it gets addictive.

Children watching TV in the dark

Children come in different ages. For the youngest of them (babies), watching TV is prohibited. This is due to the fact that the visual organs perceive excessively bright colors and high wavelength light as an irritant. This is not considered normal for the normal functioning of the nervous system.

If a baby sees constantly flashing pictures, he becomes overstimulated.

Subsequently, this condition can lead to hyperactivity syndrome and decreased concentration. The latter condition is due to the fact that the child is focused only on the TV and is not interested in the surrounding environment.

Doctors recommend showing cartoons to a child no earlier than 2 years old. By this time, the baby’s nervous system turns out to be more stable. Ophthalmologists and neurologists advise providing your baby with calm, simple cartoons that do not contain constantly flashing pictures.

What is forbidden to watch

In the first place, which is completely clear and understandable, is watching TV shows or films that contain elements of aggression and violence. We remember that a child is essentially an imitator; it is possible that the model of behavior of the bad hero will be transferred to real life.

Many parents note that a child can be absolutely indifferent to the TV being turned on, but when advertising starts, the baby drops everything and turns his gaze to the blue screen.

So, advertising should also be excluded. Firstly, it does not contain any useful information. Secondly, it only clogs your head with stupid phrases and images. Thirdly, it influences the subconscious and instills in the child a “culture of consumption.”

News programs should be excluded until the age of seven . Stories about terrorist attacks, accidents, and armed conflicts can traumatize a fragile child’s psyche, leading to neuroses and increased anxiety. If such a news story comes to your attention, then reassure the child, tell him that he is always under your protection.

Watching TV while lying down

If a person watches TV while lying down, it negatively affects the organs of vision, the spine, and blood flow in the vessels. The fact is that taking an unnatural position while watching TV causes a decrease in blood circulation. The brain does not receive enough biological fluid along with oxygen. This leads to hypoxia (oxygen starvation) and stagnation.

If a person has problems with the back and neck, the condition worsens. In extreme cases, pinched nerves occur.

Human eyes normally perceive surrounding objects well in a natural position. If a person lies down, there is an increased load on the visual organs, they try to adapt to the picture. This causes overload and disrupts the processes of accommodation of the lens and pupil.

At what age can you watch?

The World Health Organization provides data on the age at which a child can watch TV and how long they can stay in front of the screen.

  • Newborns and children under 3 years old are strictly prohibited from watching TV.
  • Preschoolers are allowed to spend no more than 30 minutes a day .
  • Primary schoolchildren from 6 to 10 years old are allowed to watch TV for no more than 1 hour
  • Acceptable time for high school age is from 1 to 3 hours .

How to minimize harm

Ophthalmologists do not require you to stop watching TV. But to reduce the strain on your eyes, neck and back, it is recommended to follow these rules:

  • the distance from a person to a television screen must be at least 2.5 m;
  • the load on the visual organs is reduced if viewing is carried out in daylight or artificial light;
  • eliminate eating while watching TV, especially in early childhood, since food enters the human body uncontrollably;
  • while watching, it is recommended to take natural poses; doctors advise sitting up straight, not lying down, keeping your back and neck straight (this preserves normal blood flow and reduces eye strain);
  • control the viewing time, for an adult it is 2-4 hours, for a child – 30-40 minutes;
  • It is recommended to avoid watching TV before bed, as this leads to overstimulation of the nervous system, especially in young children;
  • selection of TV shows that do not cause stress and nervous strain for both adults and children.

If all of the above rules are followed, the load on the eyes, nervous system, and spine will be reduced.

Human degradation

A lot of people complain about their lives. They don't like her, but they don't want to do anything. How do you think these people have fun? Of course, they sit in front of the TV. This type of activity is addictive. A person does not want to make decisions and loses interest in the world around him. He likes to follow someone else's life more than to act himself.

Do you think rich people watch TV? No. They spend this time on more useful activities - self-development.

About radiation from a TV screen

The most suitable radiation for use is the radiation from the projector. It gently enters the organs of vision and the retina. If a person watches TV, the load increases, since the emitted rays are bright and long. This is why the time spent watching TV should be limited.

In addition, the pictures on the TV are constantly flashing. It changes quickly. The retina and lens do not have time to adapt, the muscles inside and around the eyes become overstrained.

If you watch TV in the dark, the color image projected onto a person will have a stronger effect. The retina will be overworked to capture all the images.

The colors on TV are saturated, unnatural, so the cones and rods (nerve endings on the retina) continuously transmit nerve impulses to the brain. This is why a young child becomes overexcited from watching cartoons for a long time.

Watching TV in the dark is undesirable. Doctors recommend performing this action only in the light. This reduces the strain on the eyes and reduces the risk of damage to the visual organs. Ophthalmologists advise people who spend a lot of time in front of the computer and TV to periodically perform eye exercises. This is a preventive measure, if followed, a person will be able to maintain normal vision.

Is television necessary?

Television is not only about effective advertising and interesting content. These are also creative people who, for the sake of ratings, try to give the viewer what they want. Professional journalists and editors talk about various events in the country and the world in such an unbiased and comprehensive manner that each viewer has their own independent opinion on this issue. Directors immerse the viewer into what is happening on the screen. In addition, the television sector is a huge area for the work of other creative and technical professionals. Many institutes train future television workers who find themselves not only on television and become famous. And vice versa, many famous people (athletes, musicians and actors) after finishing their main careers come to the television stage and appear on camera as presenters. Also, television products, professional equipment and video content occupy a confident place in economic terms in the world market.

What is television for?

Despite all the advantages of television , both regular viewers and the employees of television channels themselves ask the question - what is television for and how does it help people? As in the case of an outdated source of useful information - a book, people used to ask: is a book necessary in the age of television? Now many people believe that the age of the Internet has come, and they are making television a new subject of discussion about its necessity.

The Internet has been able to replace many of the functions of television and books, and even surpassed them with its variety of content, thus television and books have become an integral part of the Internet, as it strives to absorb all the available information in the world.

Now, as part of the Internet and the second most informative source of information, we can take a deeper look at the essence of television , and by its functions understand why television is needed:

  1. Informational - this function is important because specially trained, professional journalists who master the word will give you only important and necessary information. On the Internet, you would have to search and choose from a huge stream of data what is really important.
  2. Cultural - the activity of the television sphere, without which a person can move as far as possible from the traditions of his country, forget about important holidays and lose the desire for high art. Especially watching modern YouTube channels instead of TV.
  3. Social - the main function promoting a healthy lifestyle, internal and intellectual, spiritual and moral, as well as ethical traditions and trends.
  4. Entertaining - the role played by television broadcasts in order for the viewer to relax, take a break, have fun or laugh.

These functions also clearly reflect the whole essence of television , as they show us why we need television, and its sharp differences from the Internet, despite the fact that the Internet has immersed the television sphere in its networks.

Analysis of my addiction

After listening to a psychologist, I came to the conclusion that I am not obsessed with television, but there are certain prerequisites for this. Will I be able to spend the evening chatting with my husband or reading an interesting book instead of my favorite program? How much more attentive will I be to my own family if I stop following the lives of the characters in TV series? That's why I wanted to step away from TV for a week. But if a week is not a long time for someone, for me a serious test lay ahead, and this only intensified my nervousness. What if I can’t?

There are positive sides

What is so attractive about watching TV programs? Of course, there are some advantages to this action. In particular, it helps restore mental state due to stress that occurs during difficult work days. I enjoy the fascinating plot, I get involved in the viewing process, which helps me disconnect for a while from the problems that surround me every day. Television allows you to significantly expand your horizons and helps you establish communication with friends and work colleagues through discussions of programs.
