Irresponsibility. What does it mean to be an irresponsible person?

The problem of irresponsibility occurs in any society. The point is that people can't be perfect. Each of us has our own character, which may conflict with the requirements and expectations of others. But irresponsibility as such undermines all trust. You definitely need to fight it. Otherwise, the feeling of confidence in the future and the ability to overcome significant obstacles disappears. The irresponsibility of people is sometimes simply shocking: they do not want to be responsible for their actions, they refuse to make meaningful decisions related to certain life events. Many people try to live simply for their own pleasure, without trying to understand their neighbor. Being selfish means not only being overly focused on your own life, but also being dismissive of others.

What is irresponsibility

This is a person’s lack of internal obligations. Irresponsible people are not prepared for life. They do not help their loved ones (social irresponsibility) and do not complete their work. This inner freedom allows them to avoid feelings of guilt for mistakes. But even if an irresponsible person does not make an effort to improve on his own, others will constantly remind him of this.

  • parents;
  • teachers at school;
  • loved one;
  • employer;
  • Friends.

What allows us to draw conclusions about irresponsibility? There are 7 parameters:

  1. Constantly breaking promises.
  2. Deliberately false promises, “just to get rid of it.”
  3. Lack of punctuality.
  4. Poor quality work.
  5. Lack of desire for growth and development.
  6. Neglect of responsibilities.
  7. Reluctance to fulfill family responsibilities.

There are many examples of irresponsibility, because this is a common phenomenon. Everyone has encountered such an irresponsible person, because the trait is not at all uncommon. Many have noticed such qualities in themselves or have repeatedly heard similar remarks from others.

The origins of unhealthy behavior patterns: what are the causes of irresponsibility and laziness

Irresponsibility is an acquired, not an innate, personality trait. Why does a person not care about everything around him, doesn’t want anything, doesn’t strive for anything? Psychologists identify several main reasons that can lead to this form of behavior:

Features of education

Often it is the parents who are to blame for the fact that the child carries over the family behavior model into adulthood. There are several options here:

  • Lack of frameworks and rules. Sometimes the irresponsibility and laziness of parents become a bad example that the child adopts. If adults show a child that he can shirk his responsibilities with impunity, he perceives this as normal behavior and will do the same in the future.
  • Excessive strictness with inflated expectations. When parents raise a child in a system where even the slightest offense is punished, sooner or later he comes to the conclusion: it is better not to do anything at all, because anyway, mom and dad will be unhappy. The attitude continues into adulthood - a person brought up in excessive severity rarely shows initiative and prefers to remain in the shadows.
  • Overprotection. The laziness of children can be caused by the fact that their parents do not allow them to take a step on their own. They don't learn to make decisions and choices. As a result, the child becomes weak-willed and completely unprepared for adult life. [2]

Fear

Laziness and irresponsibility are often caused by fear. Perhaps one day a person took on overwhelming obligations and did not “deliver” them; as a result, he became disappointed in himself, he no longer believes in his own strength. It is more convenient for him to stick to a safe position - that is, to remain inactive.

A person who is afraid to act has formed clear beliefs: I don’t need anything, it doesn’t concern me, I’m not responsible for it. He is ready to accept any criticism addressed to him, as long as no serious obligations are placed on him. [3]

Lack of motivation

Many people are lazy and irresponsible because they lack the motivation and desire to do a particular task.

Motivation is a powerful force that pushes us to great achievements. If a person does not understand and does not see the meaning in action, then stimulating him to take active action is useless. If there is no goal, then there is no special desire to work. [3]

Disadvantages and positive aspects of irresponsibility

There is such a psychotype: people who are excellent students. They are overly responsible. They don’t want a promotion, they crave it, they are ready to do anything for the sake of a goal. Nervous breakdowns and feelings of dissatisfaction are constant companions of such people. This is perhaps the only advantage of irresponsibility: the absence of internal tension and anxiety.

The problem of irresponsibility is the inability to cope with obligations due to the lack of an internal sense of duty. So, people easily lose their jobs for the sake of a fleeting whim to play hooky. They make false promises to get rid of them and don’t keep them. Irresponsible husbands do not strive to provide for their family; they put everything on their wife’s shoulders: both housekeeping and work. Irresponsible wives ignore the mountains of dirty dishes and the lack of food in the refrigerator. The spouse, coming home from work, must shoulder this responsibility. Along with irresponsibility are selfishness, unpunctuality, and deceit. Lies are the tool of an irresponsible person.

The staff degrades and leaves

A leader who cannot or does not want to delegate part of his responsibility to subordinates leaves people in an irresponsible position. He doesn’t know how, doesn’t know how, is afraid of resistance from them, it’s interesting to do it himself... It doesn’t matter what the reason is. It is important that after some time the unit degrades, performing only routine tasks. The best leave because they are bored, and the manager suffers from professional burnout and quits. The company was left alone with degrading employees. What is the result here?

Manifestations of irresponsibility in life

What does an irresponsible person look like?

  • Often doesn't keep promises.
  • This is an employee who cannot be trusted with an important task.
  • You cannot rely on an irresponsible husband.
  • He gets down to business, but doesn't finish it.
  • An irresponsible wife is a slob and a bad housewife.
  • An irresponsible child can study well or poorly. The distinguishing feature here is that he is late and does not come to competitions for trivial reasons. Signs up for a club and does not attend it.
  • Constantly being late for work by an irresponsible person. But there are people with an innate sense of time, they are punctual. At the same time, they can be irresponsible.

There are many situations in which this trait can manifest itself. It all depends on the individual and the circumstances.

Everything collapses at the most unexpected moment

There is one particularly responsible leader on your team. And there are everyone else who allows him to take everything upon himself. As a result, the “he who doesn’t have a horse, mount me” model fails at the most stressful moment: he collected projects for himself, promised, prophesied and... failed, didn’t have time, got sick, quit (underline as necessary). Everyone waited, hoped, smoked, sitting on his neck, and in the end they were left with nothing. Hence the conclusion: hyper-responsibility is the same as irresponsibility. And don’t believe anyone who assures you that the whole company rests on him. Maybe it lasts, but not for long and not all of it.

How to overcome irresponsibility

There are 4 methods of dealing with irresponsibility:

  • Learn to complete tasks to completion. Don't undertake it if you're not sure you'll get it done. And if you undertake it, do it.
  • Remember your responsibilities. You must be respectful to your family. They are obligated to be responsible for their children and raise them.
  • Learn to tell yourself: “No.” In this world, permissiveness is possible only among irresponsible people.
  • Ask those around you to control themselves. Remind, pull, correct. This way you will enter the role position of a responsible person.

Don't take on too much. You must answer for every promise.

Attempts to instill responsibility in others are an initially unsuccessful task. A person is born with a set of qualities. They are partially adjusted due to external circumstances: upbringing, events, lifestyle. A person can change himself on his own, but for this he will have to spend a lot of effort, a lot of time, and make a lot of effort. Habits don't give up so easily. It is impossible to change a person from the outside. Don't flatter yourself. No amount of threats or blackmail will help.

Clients are leaving

If you have a sales manager on your team (and almost every team has a head of sales), then this item is dedicated to him. When building the work of its department, the ROP must transfer responsibility for the actions and thoughts of customers to sales managers. Only in this way will they be able to guarantee a sales volume slightly greater than “our product sells itself.” However, often irresponsible managers transfer responsibility to the client:

  • It’s not I who have to show him, but he can see everything himself, not blind;
  • It is not I who should regulate his negative attitude, but let him calm down;
  • It’s not me who has to give him convincing arguments, but let him figure out why he needs our product or service;
  • It’s not me who will help him choose by asking the right questions, but let him ask me if he doesn’t understand something;

And if the client left, then, of course, “You’re a fool!” And so the ROP then abdicates responsibility at the meeting: “What do you want from me with such fierce competition? We did everything we could!”

Throw a stone at me, those who have never heard such a thing.

conclusions

If you are wondering how to get rid of irresponsibility, you are on the right track. Take control, make a commitment, and start striving for excellence. Irresponsibility and responsibility are two sides of the same coin. This is not the most difficult improvement; it is much more difficult to fight complexes and phobias. Developing a useful quality in yourself is a difficult task, but it is doable. The main thing is to set a goal and take a small step towards it every day. Remember that this quality decorates, helps to achieve success in life, get a promotion at work and compliments among friends.

Personnel costs are rising

In order to competently transfer part of your managerial responsibility to a subordinate, you must be able to clearly separate executive responsibility from managerial responsibility. Illiterate handover is fraught with two opposite consequences, depending on the employee’s personality type.

For example, you send your subordinate to a meeting with your manager, that is, you transfer to him your responsibility - to be controlled by your boss. Your logic is as follows: “I already have a lot of work to do, but he is better versed in this technical issue and will be able to clearly answer all the questions.” If your subordinate is a person without career ambitions, but, on the contrary, anxious and suspicious, a natural tension may arise in him: “Why the hell, when I get 10 rubles, I do work worth 15, and they also yell at me at a meeting?” If the employee is happy to try and really knows everything clearly, and at that very meeting they are happy with him, a natural question may arise from your boss: “Why the hell am I paying 15 rubles + 10 rubles, if you can increase the performer’s salary by a couple of rubles, and the intermediate liquidate?" But in practice this almost never happens. And your boss continues to pay 25 rubles for work that costs a maximum of 12. And then he complains that there is not enough money for new technologies!

Possible reasons

Prolonged stress and overwork can lead to laziness in everyday life.
Let's look at what may be at the origins of the condition when apathy and laziness appear.

  1. Lack of sufficient motivation. A person does not want to take on something when he has no motive. In this situation we are talking about external incentives. For example, if you promise a child that after he learns his homework, he will receive a reward, then he will become interested in sitting down for his lessons. Another child may be threatened with punishment for not completing homework, and then motivation will appear, but this time dictated by the threat.
  2. The result of the presence of a pathological condition. Fatigue and laziness, which go hand in hand with each other, can be a sign of health problems. This could all be due to constant stress, extreme fatigue, or a bacterial or viral infection. In such a situation, it is very important to be able to determine what exactly influenced the occurrence of the apathetic state in order to direct efforts to get rid of the disease. If this is the result of overwork, then give yourself a rest, take a vacation, go on vacation. If the result of prolonged stress is to relax, change the environment, or look at the things that surround you, stop overreacting to problems.
  3. Having weak willpower. It is important to be able to maintain a balance between what you need and what you want. It is difficult for certain individuals to force themselves to do something, in particular due to their upbringing or character traits. Laziness is their weakness. Such people lack self-control, self-control, they cannot control themselves. To get rid of laziness of this etiology, you will need a lot of effort to cultivate in yourself the qualities that form willpower. But, if this can be done, then an inveterate lazy person can turn into an active person.
  4. Lifestyle. A situation where laziness is a person’s behavior style. The individual believes that his lifestyle is normal. This is often the result of being raised in a family where lack of initiative was encouraged and considered normal.
  5. Understanding the meaninglessness of the upcoming activity. A situation when a person does not want to do something, realizing that his actions will be a failure. If an adult, previously noted for his hard work, suddenly begins to experience constant apathy in relation to the work being done, it is likely that it is time to change something. Understand yourself, are you satisfied with your activities?
  6. The presence of self-doubt. A situation when a person puts off an important task until later, not because he does not want to do it, but because he is afraid of possible failure. In this case, you need to increase your self-esteem. If you do nothing, success will pass you by. It is important that the individual’s inner circle be nearby, provide him with their support, and allow him to believe in himself.
  7. Irresponsibility. We are talking about people who are not used to being responsible for their actions, for their lives. They easily shift their problems onto other people's shoulders and go with the flow. As a rule, everything is to blame for the incorrect upbringing of parents, who did not instill a love of cleanliness, order, an active position in life; most likely, they decided everything for their child and did not allow him to be independent.

It is important to understand what causes laziness. When a person cannot understand its cause, he risks falling into a depressive state, which will lead to the occurrence of psychosomatic ailments.

Azarova Galina Gordeevna, leading healthy lifestyle instructor, teacher at the school named after Marshal V.I. Chuikova.

In 1977, I underwent a major operation, losing a very noticeable part of my body. But I didn’t consider myself disabled, but thought: why did this happen to me? And what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again? I started reading books on medicine, but they talked about diseases and their treatment in hospitals. Then I started looking for books about disease prevention, a healthy lifestyle, various exercises, met very interesting people, went to different sections, groups, and finally came to the “Unity” Center for Psychophysical Improvement. In the very first month of classes, I realized where I ended up - that is, exactly where I wanted to go - and in parallel with attending classes, I organized a health group at my school. The school director supported me; many teachers attended classes. Then the parents of our students began to come. My goal was not only to strengthen my own health, but also the health of the people around me, children and adolescents, the nation as a whole, and the psychosphere of the Earth. And together with the members of Unity, I am developing plans and ways to achieve this great goal. Wish us success! And join us!

Grebneva Larisa Aleksandrovna (70 years old, born in 1949), camp for adults “Active Longevity - 2019”

At the camp I discovered that I could draw, I could walk without glasses (the fear that I couldn’t live without them disappeared), and I came to understand the importance of muscle relaxation. I learned a lot of things I needed: new exercises for mobility of muscles, joints and spine, the ability to relax. I learned to look relaxed, I felt that my eyes didn’t strain and I could see more clearly. I really liked palming, everything is clearly visible after it. As a result, the decision came to take off my glasses as often as possible and try to watch without glasses. At the beginning of the camp I saw the 1st line of the table, at the end - the 3rd.

Assigned tasks are ignored

Responsibility is not a glass of water. When someone takes it upon themselves, you can’t see it. This means that you can be deceived: they can say that they took it, but in reality they don’t take it. Or take it and then throw it off or give it to someone. And you, having set a task and hoping for fulfillment, will wait a long time for the promised results, then at a meeting you will sort out who is to blame and what to do, and again set tasks and give responsibility. And they won't take it again. And you will never see it: whether you took it or not, and where you threw it off. Because it's not a glass!
